Science Fiction Group Work---First Week

 Our Group
                            ---Science Fiction

We went to see a movie together for our group research. We really had fun and also learnt something form the movie.

"Gravity" that's the movie we watched together. I have to say, it is a AMAZING movie! The scenes, the galaxy, the space. After watched it, I felt so unreal to live on earth...and I really got a sense of another space's feeling. It is a great inspiration for our science fiction topic.

Our lovely group

Big smiles~~~~haha

Questions:

1. What exactly science fiction is, the space? the robert? or the transformer?

2. How science fiction relates to the real life and what can we develop it to be used in real life?

3. How to let "fashion" feel "fiction", what kind of material can present the sense of science fiction?

Nonverbal Communication-Group Project

Group: Serrino, Olivia, Rocha
Name: "-"

It is very interesting that our group members came up the same idea at the same time---We all thought about "Shh" as our group logo inspiration at the very beginning. Nonverbal communication can be totally expressed in this simple word-"Shh". Just be quiet, then, feel.

Here is our sketches for our logo.We just kept drawing and drawing our nonstop ideas at first. Because you never know what amazing thing will pop up in your mind when you doing brain storm.

After each of us drew own ideas, we picked main ideas, and then, we tried to combine them together in digtal way.

Ater class critique, we found that we put too much main ideas inside our logo. It's true, we did not want to throw all main ideas, ended at "too much." It's the beauty of class critique--- be told different and very useful suggestions.

In addition to this, we did not just change the form of our logo, but also the colors. We changed the black and red creepy combination to soft pastal colors.

Finally, final logo.

Less Is More.

For our final design, we want to make it really useful in life, so we made a hand-out booklet. It includes 10 pages of 5 inches times 5 inches squares. In this booklet, we designed three ways to do nonverbal communication based on our research.

" When I do not talk to anyone, I prefer to listen to the music, it makes me peaceful." This quote is from my best friend Yixuan Shan. She gave us an inspiration of music communication---listening to other's favorite music to know  more about her/him. Also, my friend Elina said "nonverbal communication reminds me of being a baby, when I didn't know how to talk, mom's heartbeats is the only thing can give me the sense of secure." . It is a very unique thought for us and we got the second idea---listen to other's heartbeats for communicating, just feel inside without language. The third way is the most common way for most people---eye contact. That's how majority people "talk" to strangers and get first impression.

In our booklet, we tried to be simple and clean. We wanted to be very clearly to guide people how to communicate without language with others.

Here is the almost final pieces of our designs in black and white version. At the end, we still choose black version one.

Final Booklet Design

We love our final piece and really looking forward to hearing class critique on Friday.

MEMOIR

Sometimes, I feel I do not really remember anything. I do remember what the class is for tomorrow, or what our homework is. However, if you want me to tell you a memory, I need to think for a while. I need to think so hard about the blurry faces or the places, which should not be forgettable, but I did forget the name. After a while thinking, I find I do not really care about the faces, the names or the places. The particular feeling of a part of memory is what I care about, the feeling which can hit my head or heart suddenly, the feeling reminds me of a moment which makes the memory so precious for me.

“I want to be a fashion designer.”
This is how I tell everybody about my dream. I enjoy this sentence, and I am proud of these two words “fashion designer”. However, when you chase your dream, there are always so many tiny stones or even walls to stop you. They make you think, “Do I love what I do?” or “ Is this what I wanted?” and then you start to chase your dream again. It is impossible that you never questioned yourself, and I remembered that I have confused, cried, and lost.
I was 18 when I started my journey to be a fashion designer; it was a nice start because I got in London College of Fashion, which is one of the top fashion schools in London. I knew I was talented and I was so confident when I actually knew nothing about fashion design. At the final foundation fashion show, I did not want to face the real world, which is: in my class, some students had already known how to sew; some of them have bachelor’s degrees; some of them had been working for few years. Who knew nothing about making a garment? Only me.
I felt lost for few days. I did not know what to do and how to do. “Confused” could not even describe me in that time. I did not fall on my way by tiny stones, but I did stock for days, thousands of seconds. One morning, I did not know what I was thinking; I was walking without any thinking actually. I walked to tutor’s office. After I told her everything, even pieces of fragile feelings. I remembered the smiling on her face, very warm, and I remembered the sunshine on her left brown eye lashes, I saw her caring in the light brown eyeball.
Finally, after thousands hours of fighting with my works, the day came--fashion show day. That day, I realized why fashion industry is called as cut-throat business. There were so crowded and mess in the make-up room, everyone seemed brought all of their could be used make-up stuff. No one had time to look around others; they were focused on their own model with their own designed clothes. I thought got up at 6 am is early enough, apparently, looking at my classmate’s finished make up model on the chair, I realized I was so wrong. I rushed to a corner with my model who was one of my best friends, magic happened. My dress size became bigger with no reason. I stood in front of her with no words, actually I did not know how long the silence was, until I hard “I want to be gorgeous on your show, with your dress, so I took lost-weight pills these days.” That was moving, that made me almost cry. “Calm down.” is the only word in my head in that minute. This was not expected to happen. I did not count how many people I been asked if they had pins with them, at least 15 I guess. Either they did not have them or they need them and not even one pin could be free for me. In the end, I got my pins from writing center. You could not blame others did not help you, you could only blame yourself did not prepare well for such a very important show.
At the backstage, I just remembered people rushed around, busy to handle every detail for their show. I remembered two kind make up students helped me a lot for my show; I remembered the teacher came by for the final check and told me to redo the dress tail edge part at the last half hour; I remember my model was so nervous that she fell on the stage when the rehearsal.
By which I mean “remembered” is I remembered those parts as the images flooding in my mind really quick, but for the memory of my model finally walking on the official stage to show my first garment in my life, I remembered every, little, pieces of details of the images in my head. I remembered she was the third one to walk out from the backstage. At the first second she stood on the stage, I knew everything was worth. It is hard to describe that moment; I could feel that was the most excited moment in my 18 years. The exciting moment was not like a moment, which I wanted to scream, It was a moment that I wanted to cry and laugh at the same time. I could feel my heart pounded hard and my hands did not have temperature. I did feel nervous too, very nervous. The closest word to tell that moment, I guess I would still say, I was so excited. I did not notice I had seen so much in my eyes that moment, but now the images are all in my mind. I saw lots of cameras were held to capture every move of my model; I saw the spotlight and flashes on her was so shinny that reflected my eyes a little bit sensitive with water; I saw the black top shaped my model as a queen, and the dress flew with the rhythm that she walked; I saw my model pursed her lips tight, I knew she was nervous but she made the moment gorgeous. Also, I heard something. I heard my tutor on the front row said “amazing” twice, which I still could not believe If I did not re- listened the record of that 2 minutes at least 5 times; I heard the applause was so loud that made me awake from the moment.
The first thing I did after the show is run to my model and give her a big hug. She made an unforgettable moment in my life. At that time, I suddenly realized what made the moment excited-be grateful. Be thankful for life that it did not give us everything, but it gave you talent to push you to learn more; be thankful for people who helped you when you lost, but if they did not, that is normal; be thankful for people who make your life shinny which you did not expect to happen. We can not deny that there will be so many glory moments in our life, but instead of remembering it, learning from that moment is much more important.

Jasmine's Bio

Jasmine’s Bio
Jeeyoung Suk is a fashion student of Parsons, who was born in Korean and started her university life in Manhattan, New York. Her English nickname is Jasmine which she prefers others to call her. The reason why she loves fashion is not complicated, everything just came naturally. In the past time, she tried many experiences to find her interests. Finally, after her high school art classes, she found out that art was what she really loved and enjoyed working on. The fact is she is really talented. She used to design T-shirts for classmates;her painting was elected at the Hi Seoul Festival; and she was a member of National Art Honors Society in high school. In addition to this, she has received offers from New York University, Parsons for The New School, Pratt, and many famous art universities. Actually, she had hard time to choose her favorite school, because Jasmine is a very creative person who does not really like following the rules of art from teachers; she prefers to create in own ways. At the end, she chose her dream school---Parsons, which university is famous for its creative teaching style. However, she has not decided which major she will choose---Fashion design or Design management. Because she is good at both areas---designing and marketing. Although now, she already has a fixed goal that she will definitely work in the fashion industry, she still confused by which fashion area is better for her. As a freshman in foundation year, she is working hard to experience many areas of design and then she will know wich major she is really brillant at. Just like what she said: “There are so many possibilities on me."

Group Mission

Group Mission Statement

Serrino, Olivia, Racha – we, as “-”, decide to come up a mission about emotions and we want people to start using nonverbal communication. The reason is that since now we are all living in a crazy world and surrounding with so many different people, you can barely get one another’s feeling, even you are close. Talking is a simple way to connect, but to get into the inside of the other person, use nonverbal communication, such as touching, listening, and looking, will give you a brand new expression.

As a freshman in foundation year, she is working hard to experience many areas of design and then she will know wich major she is really brillant at. Just like what she said: “There are so many possibilities on me.”

As you can see, my partner she has strong personality. She is actually the kind of girl who looks though on surface, easygoing inside.

That is why I made this font for her. Every letter of this Font has different combination-

-Half powerful(straight), half soft(wave). Just like her, two personalities.

I just lost my USB, so I cannot find the original version of my 26 letters. (OMG, hope I can find it in school tomorrow!! God bless me><) This is the print out version.

My Font is actually playful in this way, that is how I want everyone to know the real Jasmine, who is a very nice friend. The form of the ordering, I choose very simple, because I didn't want a too much, too messy feeling. The font is playful enough I think.

The Big J means Jasmine, and O means Olivia. And the A and I in O are the same letters in our name. I combined our name together in this photo, because it was a peer to peer project, I wanted to show us in it. I did not know before, but we two actually had very similar personality. This photo can show the connection of us.

2 Pages layout

For my 2 pages layout, I want the left page be very simple, just like what Jasmine likes---Simple style. But even it is very simple, it can still show the key words of her.

For the right page, I want it to have strong contrast with the left one. So I made it a little bit "messy". I think Jasmine struggles herself inside and outside, because of her two very different personalities. Thus, I made the constriction. Also, I made this page strong, not simple. Because, this is my first impression of Jasmine. In the interview, She said" There are many possibilities on me." So, I put word "Possibilities" in the very back of the photo, Means You can never know Jasmine, because she doesnt even know how she will be in the future. The vortex of the bright part means "Future". For the front part I made her name in my font, but I put big black circle to cover it,because I want to show the mysterious and unsure about her.

TEXT Pages

This is the two pages layout that I like the most.

The reasons why I think this is very effective are that:
  • The black and white background has very strong contrast, even it seems a little messy at the first glance, but actually, you can feel the city moment immediately.
  • Then you see the words, you know why the background like this.
  • The text here using the same color with the background---Black and White. You can hardly see the words first because of the color, so, it gets the kind of mysterious feeling and make viewers curious.
  • For sure the designer made this effect on purpose. The words "CONCEAL" "SHADOWING" shows the concept. "CONCEAL" hides in the black color and shows up half by contrast with the white part. "Shadowing" and "You" just so white and bright, like a highlight in this photo. I guess the designer was thinking---you were concealed in this busy. boom city.
  • The text font is very simple, just imagine what the pages would look like if the font is very complicated? That will be too much I think.
Thus, I like the way how color combining in these two pages and the text color choosing. Also, the combination between messy background and simple font, mysterious but clearly powerful.
